“I’m, like, a lot,” Chester says, less than ten minutes into the first episode of HBO Max’s Genera+ion. The character, played by Justice Smith, wears a banded rainbow crop top with buckle loops, tartan pants and a clear eyelet belt. Even with an introduction like this, extra is an understatement. The show premiered at the beginning of spring with a bang, centering its ensemble cast and moving in close. You’re introduced to a cohort of Gen Z teens — for the most part, friends — and their interlocking relationships, questions and thoughts. In the world of Genera+ion, life is strangely funny, sometimes surreal, but the people are always gentle and true. ◆
